Letter to the Bear

Dear Mr. Bear,

Three years ago we (elderly mom & her 2 daughters) were moving mom out of her home of 57 years in Selkirk. Day after day, for 4 months, we would drive past you at the end of a long day. You, Mr. Bear, never failed to make us smile. We conjured up stories of your past and your present situation. Sometimes you looked happy and some days not so. But, we always felt your determination and patience awaiting the call to go out on the field and play a game. Each evening we would call out to you, “Hang in there, Mr. Bear, your turn will come!” We believed you heard our words of support because you would still be there the next evening waiting ever so patiently.

During the day time you always seemed so eager to start the day—full of hope and grateful that you had a chance, again. Every evening you seemed to say “It’s okay, maybe tomorrow!” Always so optimistic.

We know you are content living in front of your business building. We’re sure many other people wave to you and wish you a great day. We’re sure you always greet all your working colleagues with an optimistic cheer and wishes for a fabulous day. That is a special quality and we wanted you to know that you continue to bring light into our world. You always fueled good discussion in the car about resilience, determination, and hope.

That is why we stopped today to leave you this message. Mom is late-nineties but we still giggle like little kids when we add another “tale” to your story.
