Leading by Example: John Di Lallo’s Journey from Dockworker to Foreman at Gardewine

John Di Lallo joined Gardewine in May 2004 as a full-time dockworker and lead hand. Since then, he has grown into the role of foreman, developing his leadership through hands-on experience and a thoughtful approach.

Reflecting on leadership, John says, “Managing people is something you learn over time. For me, it’s about maintaining a positive attitude. When people feel supported, they work better and enjoy their jobs more.”

On the dock, John is known for being respectful, approachable, and organized. He leads by example, making sure the dock is prepared for the next shift and that all equipment undergoes safety checks to ensure it’s in good working order.

Early in his career at Gardewine, John faced a personal challenge. Despite being new, his manager stepped up to support him during that time. That act of kindness left a lasting impression and showed John the values Gardewine stands for.

John brings that same spirit to his leadership, supporting his team and fostering a culture where safety and well-being are always a priority. For him, safety goes beyond rules—it’s about everyone looking out for one another every day.

His advice to new team members: bring a positive attitude, be honest, and you will find a welcoming environment here.
